Saxenda is FDA-approved for use in the following individuals based on body mass index (BMI):
- Adults with overweight (BMI of 27 or more) and at least one weight-related condition (such as hypertension of type 2 diabetes)
- Adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or more)
- Adolescents 12 to 17 years old with obesity
Pediatric obesity is defined as a BMI in the 95th percentile or greater for age and sex, says Dr. Mann. The manufacturer labeling also includes a minimum pediatric weight requirement above 132 pounds.
Saxenda is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, says Dr. Mann, and in people with a rare, hereditary endocrine disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN 2). “It is also contraindicated in pregnancy,” she says.
According to the manufacturer (Novo Nordisk), Saxenda also hasn’t been studied for use during lactation.
